Imperial Stout • 16.1% ABV • Brewed at De Proefbrouwerij, Belgium
From Brewdog’s online web-shop, we have the pleasure of trying out a pretty powerful imperial stout from gypsy brewer legends, Mikkeller.
Brewed at Belgium’s de ProefBrouwerij, here is Mikkeller 黑 / Black
Back in 2010, Black was described as being the strongest beer in Scandinavia at 16.1% ABV, then Sigtuna Brygghus managed to surpass this with their Ace of Spades Imperial Stout which reaches a staggering 18.5% ABV.
Mikkeller reclaimed the title with their BLK Fist imperial stout which punches through the boundaries at a monstrous 26.1%.
Still not for sissies according to Mikkeller, Black is brewed with a mixture of malts, roasted barley, dark cassonade sugar (made from a mixture of sugar crystals and candy syrup), ale yeast and champagne yeast.
Time to crack this beast open!
|Appearance||Rich, full and black with a massive brown head and awesome retention power. The really tight bubbles produce a foam which stays put throughout the drinking experience.|
|Aroma||Lots of burnt and dark malts kick things off at the beginning, moving in with dark fruit esters as well as rich and creamy coffee roast notes.
An alcohol warmth can be picked up but this is fairly subtle considering the high ABV.
|Flavour||Christ on a Bike!
Intense, powerful burnt & toffee notes move into coffee & chocolate and move swiftly into a spicy liquorish with a little pepper.
|Mouthfeel|| A full-bodied stout with a rich and creamy texture.
Creates a powerful bitterness that although pleasant, when mixed with the other elements really knocks your socks off from the first sip
You most certainly feel the alcohol warmth.
|Overall||Black hits all the marks in complexity of aroma and flavour. It just keeps changing and developing as it warms.An absolute gem of a beer and perfect for those after a palate wrecker of a beer, where you will lose the ability to taste anything else for the rest of the night.
I’d recommend ending the night on this one!
