Fruit Beer • 6 % ABV • Buxton, UK / Stockholm, Sweden
Towards the latter part of 2016, a collaboration of epic proportions was born by Buxton Brewery, based here in the UK, and Omnipollo from Sweden.
Their creation was a clever range of ice cream beers which came in a selection of flavours. Taking over the social media airwaves right through until the end of the year and beyond.
The ice cream range includes the likes of Chocolate, Rocky Road, Vanilla and Texas Pecan.
Ingredients such as lactose sugar, heaps of vanilla beans and varying fruits\fruit juices help to give the flavour and feel of your favourite ice cream flavours.
I’m please to say that I’ve got my hands on a Lemon Meringue Ice Cream Pie which makes use of lactose sugar, is kettle soured and conditioned with plenty of lemon juice.
I’ve been looking forward to cracking this one open since the New Year. Lets see what its all about!
Lemon Meringue Ice Cream Pie filled the glass with a beer, straw in colour with a small white head which settles quickly and giving some haziness.
The aroma gave a sour fruitiness with elements of pineapple, citrus and grapefruit with the slightest hint of sweetness. The sweetness, for me, came from the pineapple notes but became more pronounced as the temperature rose.
The flavour was really sharp, tart, tangy and juicy. Big citrus and lemon flavours hit you from the off, whilst a sweetness can be picked up from the retro-nasal stage.
This beer imitated the intensity of a tart, icy, lemon sorbet as opposed to a lemon meringue pie – this was not a bad thing.
It’s a beer with a light/medium body with a little carbonation and lots of tartness. The zingyness really gets the mouth tingling and leaves a lasting sourness at the back of the tongue.
Although a a really nice fruit\sour beer, I don’t think Lemon Meringue Ice Cream Pie matched Rocky Road or Ice Cream Pale; those were special beers which really tasted like the real thing. It was mental!
All three of our Buxton / Omnipollo Ice Cream beers were sourced from Small Bar in Cardiff and ranged between around £7 – £11 each.
