American Strong Ale • 7.2 % ABV • Brewed at Stone Brewing, Escondido, California USA
Moving into American strong ale territory, my next beer comes from Arrogant Brewing.
Arrogant Brewing themselves only started brewing back in 2015 after officially splitting from Stone Brewing who came up with the original recipe for the beer back in 1995.
Aiming to produce a recipe for Stone pale ale, something went amiss during the process and instead they ended up developing the powerful and arrogant beer known only as Arrogant Bastard.
Arrogant Bastard is described by the brewers as an aggressive beer. They even go so far as to say that “You probably wont like it” and that “It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciation an ale of this quality or depth”.
If you drink a beer called Arrogant Bastard, I guess you’ve got to expect a little attitude.
I’m expecting big flavours and big everything in this beer. The fact that it comes in a tallboy can is a great start.
Lets crack it open and see if it delivers!
Arrogant Bastard is deep copper in colour and has a good clarity. A big head forms that is tan in colour and has enough body to sit around for some time after pouring.
The aroma is made up of sweet toffee and bready malt, which mixes with a rich fruity hoppiness. On breathing it in, a touch of alcohol warmth hits the back your throat too.
Bold in flavour, you get an awesome balance of rich toffee and bread from the malt and are hit with big resinous hops along with rich stone fruits.
Finally, you are led into a powerful and long-lasting bitterness. Oh it lasts!
Arrogant Bastard is a medium bodied beer with a good level of carbonation to push the power of the malt and hop flavours. The hops powerful bitterness gives a touch of astringency that works with the beer rather than against it.
Everything about this beer is BIG and most certainly arrogant.
It was a great American Strong Beer with lots of aroma, flavour and depth.
Was I worthy? I do believe I was and I’ll be returning for more.
If you have had an opportunity to try a can, then visit @biertaster and let me know what you thought of Arrogant Bastard.
