Elvis Juice – Brewdog

elvisIPA • 6.5 % ABV • Aberdeenshire, Scotland

It hit the news recently that a legal dispute has been launched by the Presley estate, over the exclusivity of the name ‘Elvis’and more importantly against Brewdog beverage Elvis Juice.
Brewdog owners James Watt and Martin Dickie’s quick thinking has led to them changing their first names by deed poll (to Elvis) in a clever effort to brilliantly market the beer against their own name, as opposed to Mr Presley himself.
As luck would have it, a can from Beer52 is sitting comfortably in my fridge so it seems only fair to try it out.

What are we looking at with Elvis Juice then?
Big US Hops varieties such as Citra, Mosaic and Amarillo mix with pale and Caramalts are brought together with large quantities of Grapefruit peel and zest to offer, as Brewdog describe, a caramel malt base, supporting a full frontal citrus overload.
Waves of crashing pine, orange and grapefruit round out this citrus infused IPA.
Lets pop the aluminium seal and give it a blast!

Elvis Juice is light amber in colour with just a touch of haze and produces a really lively, white head which remains persistent on the surface.
A powerful hoppy aroma fills the nostrils which is made up of tropical fruit, resin and grapefruit. There is a low malt aroma due to the hop forward character and I was also able to get a light alcohol note on the back of my throat.
There is a highly hopped flavour with an emphasis on the tropical fruit. The grapefruit adds a sharp juiciness to the mix. A sweet biscuit\caramel malt flavour follows through and leads to a long and dry bitterness.
A medium bodied beer with a smooth texture and a seltzer like carbonation really perks up the taste buds.
Elvis Juice is a great example of an American IPA with lots of flavour and packs a real punch. So much so that it was able to stand up to a Chicken Madras that I’d cooked up and eaten shortly after the review!
Additionally, If by some chance your first name is actually Elvis, you can even get a free half on the Brewdog House.
